Shining Iridescent Heart - Ammolite Heart

A luminous, opalescent Ammolite Heart from Canada, Alberta. The exceptionally intense iridescence testifies to a perfectly preserved original aragonite shell.

The intensity of the iridescence is gemmologically assessed by two factors: reflection strength (how much light is reflected by the lamellar layers) and color clarity (how sharply defined the iridescent colors are). Luminous pieces exhibit both properties to the maximum extent.

The Bearpaw Formation on the St. Mary River in Alberta contains the Ammolite material in an approximately 30 cm thick sedimentary layer. Excavation is carried out manually under strict lithostratigraphic control, as the material quality varies significantly depending on the layer.

The heart shape is a classic jewelry tradition of Canadian workshops. The polished outer surface reveals the full iridescence under direct illumination.
