Beautiful opalescent heart - Ammolite heart

An iridescent Ammolite heart from Canada, Alberta. The iridescence of this piece is dominated by red-orange color tones, a lamellar thickness classification in the 600-700 nanometer range.

The relationship between lamellar thickness and iridescence color follows clear physical laws. With very thin lamellae, blue reflections dominate; with medium-sized ones, green; and with thicker ones, red-orange iridescence. The natural variation of the lamellae across the shell creates the characteristic multi-color play.

Red-orange iridescence is particularly valued gemologically; the warm color tone has an activating and gemstone-like effect. Material with dominant red iridescence is a premium classification in the Ammolite market.
