An ametrine crystal from Bolivia. Purple amethyst and yellow citrine in a single crystal, separated by a sharp geometric boundary line.
Quartz has a refractive index of approximately 1.54 to 1.55, similar to glass. Ametrine shows identical refraction in both color zones, as the optical property is determined by the crystal lattice and not by the trace element coloring.
Ametrine is a geologically unique variety of quartz. The only commercially viable deposit worldwide is the Anahí mine in the Bolivian Pantanal wetlands.
According to historical tradition, the Anahí mine was discovered by Spanish conquistadors in the 17th century. The daughter of a local chieftain, named Anahí, is said to have been married to a conquistador. She presented him with the mine as a dowry.
Protect from direct sunlight as fading may occur. Dry clean with a soft cloth.
