Petrified wood from Arizona originates from the Triassic Chinle Formation (approx. 225 million years ago). Silica-rich groundwater penetrated the wood tissue cell by cell, molecularly replacing the organic substance with quartz and agate. Growth rings, vascular bundles, and medullary rays are preserved 1:1.

The polished cut surface reveals the mineralization history: iron oxides color red-orange, manganese oxides black, quartz background white-grey. Each shade documents a geochemical phase in the petrification process.

Such Arizona slices are among the classic paleobotanical collector's items. The Petrified Forest region in Arizona has been a documented site for collector's material of this quality since the 19th century.
