Petrified wood from Arizona comes from the Chinle Formation of the Triassic period (approx. 225 million years ago). Silicate-containing groundwater solutions replaced the organic wood substance cell by cell, molecularly with quartz and agate. The anatomical structure is preserved 1:1.

The polished surface reveals the mineralization stratigraphy: iron oxides color red-orange and yellow, manganese oxides black, quartz background white-gray. Each color zone documents a geochemical phase in the petrification process.

The Petrified Forest region in Arizona has been a documented site for premium quality collector's material since the 19th century. Such cuts are classic paleobotanical specimens.
