Great amethyst heart with rare agate eye

An amethyst heart from Uruguay with a rare, large agate eye in the center. The eye shows the typical concentric banding of agate, embedded in the surrounding amethyst crystal field.

The heart was cut from a gas bubble approximately 100 million years old, and the back partially shows the original volcanic basalt rock. The edge has been ground and polished.

Agate eyes form in geodes when mineral banding has grown in a closed, round nodule. Such inclusions in a cut amethyst heart are rare and significantly increase its collector's value.
