Large amethyst heart with 3 symmetrical agate eyes

A large amethyst heart from Brazil, characterized by three symmetrically distributed agate eyes in the polished outer surface. The deep violet crystal cave inside opens forward like a purple maw.

Amethyst is one of the prized varieties of quartz. The violet coloration is caused by embedded iron and natural radiation exposure over millions of years. In the Brazilian agate geodes where amethyst grew, the oldest layers enclose the later inner growth, which is why agate bands frame the geode on the outside.

The three agate eyes are a rare growth constellation: at three points of the original geode, solution islands formed stable agate concentric circles, while in between, the amethyst tips continued to grow. Such multiple-eye pieces are recognized in the grinding workshop and then specifically processed into heart shapes.

The heart-cut tradition has its own workshop culture in Brazil. The pieces are cut from large geodes in such a way that the violet interior remains freely accessible and the agate outer structure is preserved as a sculptural shell.
