Rainbow inclusions in rock crystal are formed on internal cleavage-fracture surfaces that refract light into its spectral components. They are not ingrown foreign minerals, but pure optical phenomena within the crystal structure.

The Brazilian rock crystal deposits in Minas Gerais produce material with varying numbers and clarity of such rainbow inclusions. Pieces with many clearly visible rainbows are manually selected.

The distinct columnar height makes the piece suitable for a vertical display. When directly illuminated, the internal rainbow reflections become prominently visible.
