A loose iron meteorite fragment from Campo del Cielo, Argentina. The individual piece shows a characteristic fracture geometry with a visible internal material profile.
Fresh fracture surfaces in iron meteorites directly show the crystalline iron-nickel structure, without the oxidation patina typical of outer surfaces. In very fresh fractures (decades old), the Widmanstätten patterns are visible to the naked eye; in older fractures, only after acid etching.
The material hardness of Campo del Cielo iron meteorites is between Mohs 4-5, significantly harder than most minerals, comparable to pure iron. Processing requires diamond or carbide tools.
The loose format is suitable for collector display cases or paleontological-mineralogical studio setups.
An Argentinian collector's item with fracture geometry and documented material hardness (Mohs 4-5).
Protect from moisture, may oxidize. Store in a dry place. Dry clean with a soft cloth.
