Phantoms are one of the most mineralogically instructive quartz phenomena. They make the growth history of the crystal visible from within. Each line marks a brief interruption during which a micro-mineral layer was deposited before the quartz continued to grow over it.

Brazilian amethyst deposits in Rio Grande do Sul supply this material from volcanic geodes. The phantom classification is a distinct sub-league within the amethyst family, gemologically valuable and clearly demarcated in the collector's market.

The vertical column shape plays with every incidence of light. With direct illumination, the phantom layers become reflexively readable.
