Phantom structures are formed when quartz growth paused. During this time, a thin mineral coating was deposited on the crystal faces at that time. When growth resumed, the phantom layers were encased in the growing crystal.

The Brazilian deposits in Rio Grande do Sul supply premium material from the Serra Geral Basalt Formation. Phantom crystals are a find-based collector's classification. Not every geode yields phantom pieces.

The point shape with a polished exterior highlights the phantom layers from multiple perspectives. With backlighting, the geometric internal structures become visible with high contrast.
