Uruguayan amethysts from the Artigas region are among the darkest and most intensely colored geodes in the world. The geode was formed approximately 130 million years ago in basalt when hot, silica-rich solutions penetrated cavities.

Over millennia, crystal after crystal, the amethyst points precipitated from the solution. The reverse side shows the typical banded agate layer in white, gray, and pink, readable like a geological book.
