The Argentine province of Chaco, where the Campo del Cielo strewn field is located, is a paleoseismically active region. The impact approximately 4000 years ago generated shockwaves that are measurable in adjacent sediments as specific microstructures, paleoseismic records of the event.

The Mocoví indigenous peoples knew the iron masses as 'Mesón de Fierro' ('Iron Table') and used them for making tools and weapons. One of the few known cultures that metallurgically utilized meteorite iron before the Bronze or Iron Age.
