Amethyst with very large and very sharp rose-orange colored calcite crystals

An amethyst geode from Santa Catarina, Brazil, with unusually large and sharp rose-orange calcite crystals growing in its violet interior wall. A rare multi-generational constellation with dramatic color contrast.

The rose-orange coloration of the calcites comes from traces of manganese and iron in specific concentrations during carbonate crystallization. Such strongly colored calcite scalenohedra are considered premium material; most calcite occurrences are colorless.

The sequence of mineralization is clearly legible in the specimen: Amethyst first crystallized in the geode from silica-rich solutions. Only then did calcium carbonate-bearing solutions penetrate, allowing the large rose-orange calcites to grow as a second generation.

Santa Catarina in southern Brazil is an established amethyst deposit connected to the southern geode fields. The association with calcites of this size is a deposit sensation.
