Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony. Silica solutions crystallize in cavities in fine, concentric layers. When these layers are cut crosswise, the typical banded patterns emerge, which the sculptor uses as wing veins. This makes each butterfly visually unique.

The sculpture stands stably on a simple base. It is well suited as a desk companion or as a small gift for mineral lovers who don't necessarily want raw geodes.
