A large pyrite specimen with dense, brass-gold metallic luster pyrite cubes growing like an architectural cube mosaic from the matrix.
Pyrite is iron sulfide (FeS₂). The cubic form arises from the cubic crystal system, one of the few mineral species that naturally forms nearly perfect cubes.
Significant occurrences for such clear cube specimens are found in Peru (Huanzala) and Navajún, Spain. Both deposits produce material of this textbook quality.
The individual cubes have grown intertwined, indicating simultaneous crystallization of all tips from a uniform solution in the cavity.
Pyrite oxidizes in high humidity (pyrite disease), so dry storage is essential.
A collector's item of the highest class, suitable as a solitaire or as a teaching cabinet piece.
Store dry; oxidizes in high humidity (pyrite disease). No water. Wipe dry with a soft cloth.
