Breathtaking large pyrite with many rock crystal points and pyrite cubes

A monumental 100 cm long specimen with pyrite cubes and overgrown quartz crystal points from Peru. The metallic, golden-lustrous pyrite cubes visually contrast with the clear quartz columns, a mineral constellation of precise geometric form.

Pyrite (FeS₂) crystallizes cubically and is known for its almost perfectly cube-shaped crystals, often with characteristic striations on the surfaces. The cubes visible here display this crystallographic ideal with slightly curved faces and sharp edges.

The quartz crystal points grew from the remaining cavity areas after the pyrite phase was completed. A two-generation genesis where the mineralogy interacts geometrically: cubic symmetry of pyrite against pyramidal symmetry of quartz.

Peruvian pyrite deposits in Huanzala or Quiruvilca provide premium collector-quality material. Recovery takes place underground in complex ore veins, often several hundred meters deep.
